If you suffer from either low or high blood pressure then you really must
invest in a home blood pressure monitor. Being able to use a home monitor to
check on your blood pressure makes control and treatment a thousand times
easier for you and for your doctor.
Monitors come in different styles and are made by a range of manufacturers.
Look for the names Omron, Microlife, Panasonic and Samsung and you won't go
far wrong. Omron in particular have a long track record in making excellent blood
pressure monitors for home use.
You should choose either a monitor that goes around your upper arm or one that
fits around your wrist. The finger blood pressure monitors are prone to giving
false readings due to movement of the hand during the measuring.
Look for monitors that either come with a large cuff or that allow you to purchase a larger cuff.
Using a small cuff on larger arm is one sure way to give falsely high blood pressure readings.
Take care when using the monitor to position the arrow on the cuff over the pulse point or artery area of your
arm. If the sensor cant pick up on your pulse then you wont obtain an accurate reading and some blood
pressure monitors respond to this by giving an error message.
Another common reason for an error message when using a blood pressure monitor is when your own
readings are high. The monitor is set to pump up to a certain upper level and then to release pressure
slowly until it detects your systolic pressure level. If your level is higher than the preset pump up point or
level then an error message will show on the machine. Many machines will allow you to override this
manually by keeping your finger pressed down on the button while the cuff is inflating or pumping itself up.
Another very common reason for blood pressure monitor errors is low battery power. Do make sure you
check and replace the batteries regularly.
If you do decide to invest in a blood pressure monitor for use at home then it's always a good idea to
"calibrate it" against the machine that your doctor uses. Take your own monitor with you to a consultation
and check your blood pressure with it before your doctor checks with his or her machine. Try to make sure
that the two machines give the same or very similar readings.
