Cause Of Low Blood Pressure
Low Blood Pressure can have several causes
Although the list of possible causes of low blood pressure is long, you can think of the options falling into
two groups.
Firstly, the body is set up in such a way that the heart only needs to pump with a low pressure to get the
blood flowing properly around the body. People in this group are usually well and often have no major
symptoms from their low blood pressure.
Secondly, because of illness, lack of blood in the system or damage to the heart, the heart is unable to
generate enough pressure to pump the blood properly. People who have low blood pressure for these
reasons are often unwell, sometimes very seriously unwell, and need medical treatment to sort things
out for them.
It's not normally difficult to judge which group someone with low blood pressure falls into.

The cause of low blood pressure
You will find lots more information on this site about the different causes of low blood pressure.
Low blood pressure readings on the dial may actually be normal for you. If your pressure levels have
been low for most of your life - lets say 85/ 55 - then there is no doubt that you have low blood pressure in
a technical sense but there is nothing wrong with you or with your readings. Your body thinks and
behaves as if these are "normal readings" and so in that sense your blood pressure is "normal for you"
But if your blood pressure is usually around 125/80 and suddenly or gradually drops to a level around 85 /
55 then it’s very likely that you will become aware of symptoms related to this change. As in the above
example you have “low blood pressure” but in this instance it is not normal for you to have readings this
low. You might need to see your doctor for investigations.
